How to Integrate OpenAI APIs with Next.js App Router

Reading Time: 6 min | By Vansh

Welcome back to Vibe with Vansh! Adding generative AI capabilities—like intelligent chat assistants, automated summarizers, or custom content engines—to your web applications is easier than ever using Next.js App Router and the Vercel AI SDK.

In this hands-on guide, I walk you through connecting OpenAI models directly to secure Next.js Route Handlers with streaming responses.

The 3-Step Integration Workflow

STEP 1

Secure Your Secret API Key

Store your OPENAI_API_KEY securely inside your project's .env.local file. Never expose private API keys on client-side frontend code.

STEP 2

Build a Server-Side Route Handler

Create a Next.js API endpoint at app/api/chat/route.ts that parses incoming prompt payloads, authenticates with OpenAI, and streams text responses in real-time.

STEP 3

Render Real-Time Streaming UI with React

Use the useChat hook on your frontend to render real-time streaming AI responses smoothly without blocking page renders.

Key Best Practices to Keep in Mind

  • Implement Rate Limiting: Protect your API route using Redis or Upstash to prevent spam abuse and runaway token costs.
  • Use Streaming UI: Stream responses word-by-word so users get immediate visual feedback instead of waiting for full completions.
  • Set Maximum Token Limits: Specify strict token caps in API calls to keep compute usage efficient.
